A Special Thank You…

On behalf of the Save the Coyotes Coalition I would like to say a very special THANK YOU to Coyotes President & COO Doug Moss and his staff for the amazing WelcomeBack WhiteOut they put together Saturday night. They managed to put that together on very short notice and it was nothing short of amazing!

Not only was the experience of a WhiteOut at Jobing.com Arena amazing, Doug himself was out on the concourse greeting fans and welcoming us all out. That meant the world to us! Every staff member I encountered was friendly and exstatic about being a part of such an amazing event. Welcoming our boys back out onto the ice literally brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you, Phoenix Coyotes for that amazing night.

I’d also like to thank Dave Strader for giving the Coalition a shout out on the air during the Coyotes away game in Buffalo and helping us get our website out there to the fans. The Coalition is for everyone and we welcome everyone. The Coyotes organization and the NHL have been wonderful to the Coalition and we want to continue to do whatever we can to support them and help grow the Coyotes fan base!

To get into Lot J you’ll need the tailgate password which is “Save the Coyotes”.

Ice Edge Group Still in Coyotes Pursuit

Greetings Coyotes fans,

Things are starting to look brighter for us here in the desert! We heard from Todd Jordan today, Chief Financial Officer with Ice Edge, Holdings. The Ice Edge group wants Coyotes fans to know that their bid is still very much alive and that they plan to have a representative from their ownership group at the Coyotes Home Opener on the 10th! Hopefully they will get a TV interview so they can tell you themselves how excited they are about the possibility of purchasing the team. The entire ownership group will also be at the Coyotes game in Pittsburgh on the 7th. Hopefully they will get a chance to do an interview while they are there as well.

The biggest impact that we can have right now is in getting out to the games to show the team support and fill up the seats. This year is crucial for us, we have to prove that hockey CAN and IS working in the desert. We deserve to keep our NHL team. Coyotes fans, staff, players, everyone involved with the team in any capacity has taken a beating this summer. But this is our time, let’s show everyone exactly how the Phoenix will rise from the ashes of this mess!

Our new head coach Dave Tippett and his staff are working hard to get the team ready to be competitive this season and they need our support. The louder the building is, the harder they work.  They need to feed off the energy from the crowd. General Manager Don Maloney is putting together an impressive team on a tight budget. The Coyotes staff has a lot of catching up to do on advertising, ticket sales, suite sales, sponsorships, etc but this in no way has to be a “lame duck” season. Our team isn’t going anywhere this season and its up to us to ensure that they don’t go anywhere in the future either. The Coalition will be here helping as much as we can along the way.

Television Schedule Announced!

We finally have a TV schedule! FOX Sports Arizona will locally televise 50 Coyotes regular season games during the 2009/2010 season, all will be broadcast in High Definition. 28 of those games will be road games and 22 will be home games. In addition, the Coyotes’ road game on Tuesday, Jan. 26 against the Detroit Red Wings will also be on Versus, the NHL’s national cable broadcast partner.

Bankruptcy Judge Rejects Both Bids for the Coyotes

In a 31-page decision today, Bankruptcy Judge Redfield T. Baum says that both bids on the table are not acceptable to the court. Jim Balsillie’s bid to purchase the team and move them to Hamilton was denied with prejudice:

“This conclusion effectively is the end for the efforts of PSE, Balsillie, Moyes… to force a sale and relocation of the hockey team based upon the claimed powers in Section 363 (f)(4) of the Code; i.e., those efforts and related motions are denied with prejudice…”

The Judge left the door open to the NHL:

“In hockey parlance, the court is passing the puck to the NHL, who can decide to take another shot at the sale net or it can pass off the puck…”

In response to the ruling, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says:

“we are pleased that the Bankruptcy Court has confirmed the League’s right to select its owners and the location of its franchises. We are reviewing the opinion and considering how we can best address the court’s concerns regarding our offer to purchase the Coyotes. It remains our goal to secure the long-term stability of the Coyotes in Glendale.”

If you’d like to read the Judge’s ruling in its entirety, you can do so by going here.

So, if you haven’t done so already go buy your tickets for the Welcome Back WhiteOut! We have something to celebrate now! Filling the seats this season will be of the utmost importance. We have to prove to the NHL, the city of Glendale and the world that this is OUR team and we intend to keep them right here in Arizona where they BELONG!

COYOTES HIRE DAVE TIPPETT AS HEAD COACH

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have hired Dave Tippett as the 17th head coach in franchise history.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Dave Tippett as the new head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes,” said Maloney.  “I have always been impressed with the playing style of the teams Dave has coached.  He coaches his teams to play the game with intelligence, discipline, structure, a sense of urgency and a team-first approach.  We feel we have assembled a first-class coaching staff that is comparable to any in the NHL and are looking forward to Dave leading us to success for many years to come.”

Tippett, 48, spent the last six seasons as head coach of the Dallas Stars, posting a record of 271-162-59.  Under Tippett’s leadership, the Stars won two Pacific Division titles (2002-03 and 2005-06), made the playoffs in five out of six seasons and advanced to the 2008 Western Conference Finals.  Tippett’s 271 career regular season coaching victories rank 2nd all-time in Stars history.

During Tippett’s tenure in Dallas, the Stars finished in the top-10 in goal-scoring three times and finished no worse than sixth in the NHL in goals against in five of his six seasons, including ranking in the top three on three occasions (2006-07, 2003-04 and 2002-03).

In 2002-03, his first season as an NHL head coach, Tippett led the Stars to the best record in the Western Conference and second-best record in the league while also guiding Dallas to its sixth Division title in seven seasons.  With a record of 46-17-15-4 for 111 points, Tippett posted the fourth-highest point total by a rookie coach in NHL history.

Tippett joined the Stars organization on May 16, 2002 after serving as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings the previous three seasons.  The Kings qualified for the playoffs in all three of Tippett’s seasons with the club after having made the postseason just once in six seasons prior to Tippett’s arrival.

Prior to becoming a coach, the native of Moosomin, Saskatchewan played 11 years as a forward in the National Hockey League with the Hartford Whalers, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. In 721 career NHL games, he registered 93 goals and 169 assists for 262 points with 317 penalty minutes.

During his playing career with Hartford, Tippett served as an alternate captain and earned the Community Service, Unsung Hero, Mr. Hustle and Best Defensive Forward awards.  In 1988-89, he registered career-highs in goals (17), assists (24) and points (41).  Internationally, he captained the 1984 Canadian Olympic Team in Sarajevo and earned a silver medal as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team in Albertville, France in 1992. While at the University of North Dakota, he was a member of the 1982 NCAA Division I Championship squad.

Tippett concluded his playing career in 1995 as a player-assistant coach with the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League (IHL). He served as Houston’s head coach from 1995-96 to 1998-99, building a reputation as a highly-regarded coach with a tremendous work ethic while leading the Aeros to two 50-win seasons.  In 1999, Tippett led Houston to the Turner Cup Championship while being named the IHL Coach of the Year as well as leading the team to the Fred A. Huber Jr. Memorial Trophy by compiling the league’s best regular season record (54-15-13).  At the 1998 IHL All-Star Game, he was the co-coach of the victorious Western Conference squad.

Gretzky Steps Down as Coyotes Head Coach

Mr. Gretzky released a statement today via his official website announcing his resignation as head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.

“We all hoped there would be a resolution earlier this month to the Coyotes ownership situation, but the decision is taking longer than expected. Since both remaining bidders have made it clear that I don’t fit into their future plans, I approached General Manger Don Maloney and suggested he begin looking for someone to replace me as coach.”

“I want to thank every staff member of the Phoenix Coyotes, past and present. It was a real pleasure to work with each and every one of you. I’ve always said that Phoenix is a great sports city and deserves nothing but the best. I still believe that.”

“I’ve loved the four years I spent coaching the Coyotes. Not a day went by when I took it for granted, and I will miss the competition of the NHL dearly. It was an honor to hold the position, and I will always consider myself especially fortunate to have had this opportunity.”

Mr. Gretzky,

On behalf of the fans, the Save the Coyotes Coalition would like to thank you for your dedication to Phoenix and the Coyotes and for all you’ve done for us. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and hope our paths will cross again.

Sincerely,
