Coyotes Fan Survey

Merry Christmas Coyotes fans!

I hope you all got exactly what you wanted for Christmas and are enjoying your time with loved ones today.

I received an email from Arizona Sports and Lifestyle magazine asking for my help in getting Coyotes fans to take a survey for an article they are writing. The article is based on the premise that professional hockey can be successful in Arizona. Please take a few moments to take this quiz so that we can provide them with some information for their article.

Here’s the link to the survey:

 Thanks Coyotes fans!

The Coyotes Coalition Salutes You, Mr. Shane Doan!

The Coyotes organization has been through a ot of hardship during its existence, both in the Valley and in Winnipeg. One sure thing this organization got right is Shane Doan.

doan6

Drafted 7th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, Shane has been with this organization for the entire 12 years of his NHL career. Shane exemplifies leadership, dedication and courage. He is the ultimate athlete, the ultimate captain and the ultimate overall person. Our team is lucky to have him as a leader. We the fans are honored to watch him play.

In honor of his 1000th game played in the NHL, the Coyotes Coalition would like to dedicate this post to him in pictures. All pictures were taken by Coalition photographer Andrea Hasbrouck through out the years.

Here’s to you, Captain Doan!

Ice Edge

With the signing of the letter of intent to purchase the Coyotes by the Ice Edge investment group and the NHL, a lot of you have been asking questions regarding the Ice Edge group and their intentions for our team. I thought I’d repost this entry of an interview I did with Ice Edge CFO Todd Jordan over the summer. It might help to answer some of your questions!

I had the opportunity to speak with Todd Jordan this week. Mr. Jordan is the Chief Financial Officerfor IceEdge Holdings, LLC. He patiently and thoroughly answered my questions as I fired them away at him. My first impression of Mr. Jordan was a good one; he reached out the arm of contact to me.Why? Should IceEdge gain control of the Phoenix Coyotes, they want to form a “partnership” with the fans in Arizona. They fully realize that in order for this franchise to be successful long term, we will all have to work together. They also realize that sometimes the most valuable input comes from the fans. They themselves are fans. Mr. Jordan, the American of the group; grew up in Conneticut. Having to endure the loss of the Hartford Whalers, he is certainly no stranger to the pain of losing a team to relocation.

I’d like to share with you what IceEdge feels are the critical elements of their plan for the Coyotes:

  1. Keeping the team in Phoenix: As we all know, our team is in a bad financial position. We can stand around and point the finger of blame all day long but it won’t help the situation. We may have to do something drastic in order to turn the situation around and achieve the long term goal of keeping our team in Arizona. Thus makes the next element necessary to the IceEdge plan…
  2. Playing non-core games in Canada to drive excess revenue until the team’s financial position is in better shape: Due to recent media reports, my first concern was for the loss of playoff games and I expressed this to Mr. Jordan. I was relieved to hear that taking playoff games away from us was not part of their plan. I was also relieved to hear that this would not be a permanent arrangement. This is just an arrangement intended to drive up revenue to help the team get back on its feet. It certainly isn’t an ideal plan for the players, for the fans, for the city who will lose the revenue from those five games. However, as far as options go for making this team financially better off now, this might not be such a terrible idea. There might even be some things we can do to make this temporary situation less painful. If our team must play games elsewhere, can we not call them “home games” played in a sister city? They are not home games, home is Glendale, AZ. Can we as a fan base come up with suggestions of an acceptable name we could call these games? Perhaps one with a desert theme such as the Coyotes Sand Storm Through Canada? I’d love to hear everyone’s feedback and ideas on this…
  3. Put a winning team on the ice - higher payroll: As we all know, the key to filling up the arena and attracting the casual fan is to put a competitive team on the ice and get everyone’s attention. We have the basic elements in place. But to truly ice a competitive team we need to add a few more “finishing touches”. Having a higher payroll will help us to attract the players we need to complete the equation. Let’s face the facts; there is a lot of work to be done here in Phoenix. We’ve got a scorned fan base to repair, financial issues to remedy and local sports fans that still need to be reached. And frankly folks, if we don’t start filling up seats now, the financial situation will only worsen, making eventual relocation inevitable regardless of who purchases the team. We need something to supplement the team’s income now while we work toward those goals.
  4. Work with the city of Glendale as a partner to drive more visitation and help the Coyotes cut costs.
  5. Implementation of core business principles to an organization that has displayed very little
  6. Utilizing the Gretzky brand more effectively

The deciding factor of whether our team stays or goes once a local bidder takes control will be dependent upon us. WE can insure that whomever takes over the ownership of the team will have no choice but to keep the Coyotes in Glendale. How? Fill the arena up with fans! That will remove any reason to take away our team. We have a nice new arena and there is no shortage of corporate sponsorship opportunities in Arizona. Attendance is our biggest issue; and its quite fixable. So get out there, talk to people, educate the desert on the joy of hockey.

Spread the love folks, let’s keep our team!

I welcome your feedback and concerns. I will do my best to get all your questions answered!

09-10 Coyotes Promotional Item Distribution Policies and Procedures

Reporting Time: Please meet at Gate 3 at least 30 minutes before doors open on game days for a pre-game briefing.

Gate Assignments: A gate assignment sheet will be distributed in advance. No gate will have less than two (2) team members assigned, some may have as many as twelve (12).

Shift Time: You will be expected to be at the gate until approximately halfway through the first period. If your gate runs out of items before this time, please contact an authorized Coyotes staff member to get you additional stock for your gate. At the end of your shift, please attempt to close any leftover boxes or re-package any loose stock and place all stock neatly under the tables at your gate.

Attire: A nice Coyotes shirt and jeans with comfortable shoes or professional dress is appropriate. Many gates do require the giveaway staff to stand outside, so please prepare accordingly.

Supplies: You will be provided with a box cutter and any other necessary supplies at every game. Please be sure to return these items at the end of the game.

Misc: A positive and professional attitude is required at all times as you are representing the Coyotes and Jobing.com Arena. Promotional items are for ticketed guests only.

Giveaway Policies for Guests:

Please enforce the following policies at all gates:

One item per person, per ticket. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Items will only be distributed to a fan in line to have their ticket scanned as they enter the building. Items should not be given to fans that approach you from inside the arena.

If a guest is a season ticket holder and has an issue with the giveaway (they are asking for additional items, etc) please send them to the Season Ticket Customer Service table at Gate 7.

If a guest is not a season ticket holder and has an issue with the giveaway, please direct them to Guest Services at Gate 5.

If a guest is particularly irate and does not want to be referred to Guest Services, please contact Paul Serbic or Stacey Cohen immediately.

NHL Bid Approved

Today Judge Baum approved the NHL’s bid to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes out of bankruptcy. Here’s the official statement from NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly:

“We are pleased and very encouraged by today’s developments in court. Now that approval of the proposed sale has been entered by the Court, the National Hockey League will work to close the transaction quickly and assume full control of the Coyotes’ business operations. The League also will engage immediately in a process to identify — and expedite sale of the franchise to — new ownership that is committed to the Club’s long-term success in the Phoenix/Glendale area. We do not intend to comment publicly on that process.

“The NHL thanks Coyotes fans for their continued support of the franchise and hopes that today’s developments will provide fans further reason to embrace the Coyotes in order to ensure the team’s long-term future in Arizona.”

I’d like to emphasize the importance of that last sentence. I’m going to repeat it so that it sinks in: “The NHL thanks Coyotes fans for their continued support of the franchise and hopes that today’s developments will provide fans further reason to embrace the Coyotes in order to ensure the team’s long-term future in Arizona.” Throughout the summer the NHL has repeatedly shown us their commitment to this market. They have spent countless amounts of money in legal fees, they have had a representative in court for all the hearings. They have done more than their share and they will do more as they hunt for new ownership. I’m going to be honest here & if I offend I apologize but the time for sugar coating has come and gone.

Attendance at Jobing.com Arena thus far this season has been nothing short of pathetic. We sold out the home opener and the place hasn’t come close to filling up since. I sit there at our home games and the sinking feeling in my stomach worsens as I look around the arena and see all the empty seats. We currently have some of the cheapest ticket prices in the league, even before they were hugely discounted for opening night. Our team is having their best start to the season that they’ve seen in years. Our starting goalie was just named the NHL’s 3rd Star for the month of October. So where are the fans??? Our team needs us now more than ever. They are working their Coyote tails off each and every night. But some of the fans are taking a different approach… they are taking a “lay down and die” approach. If we average 6000 people a night at Jobing.com Arena this season the NHL will move this team. And who could blame them? That’s not even half the capacity of the arena.

So its up to you Phoenix. We now have a Coaching staff who have implemented a system that works. Our team is showing more promise than they have in years. The NHL is committed to keeping our team here if we show that we are committed to them. So what are YOU going to do? I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to go to as many games as I possibly can. I have season tickets, only one seat because that’s all that I can afford. If I can’t make it to a game, I’ll give my ticket to someone who will use it. I’m going to encourage as many people to come to games as possible. I’m going to bring people with me when possible. I’m going to tell everyone about the Coyotes and their situation. I don’t want to lose my team.
