Des Moines, IA — Former University Missouri All American and 2008 Olympic wrestler Ben Askren was in action over the weekend. Askren co-headlined a MaxFights promoted show in Iowa.
The 25 year old Askren bested Matt Delanoit with a north south choke submission at the 1:15 mark of round one. The fight saw very little strikes thrown. Delanoit surprisingly immediately looked to post Askren up against the cage.
After a few punches thrown from the clinch by Delanoit, Askren scored with a single leg takedown. Once the fight hit the floor Askren took control. Without throwing a single blow, Askren calmly worked from the top position until he locked up a textbook choke hold.
Delanoit, with a pro record 6-7, attempted to strike his way out of the hold, but was eventually forced to tap out.
Askren made news over the summer when he accepted an assistant coaching position with Pac 10 wrestling power Arizona State. The four time All American appears to be still pursuing his MMA career while he fulfills his coaching obligations at ASU. According to Askren’s camp the 3-0 welterweight would like to get back in the cage again before November.
Prior to his fight with Delanoit, Askren logged some training time at world renowned MMA gym Arizona Combat Sports which is located minutes from the ASU campus.
