D-Backs sign infielder Kelly Johnson

Kelly Johnson.(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with infielder Kelly Johnson on a one-year contract, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We believe Kelly will return to form after a down 2009 season,” Byrnes said. “He has a strong track record of hitting. He will help lengthen our lineup.”

Johnson, 27, hit .224 (68-for-303) with 47 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 29 RBI, 32 walks and 7 stolen bases in 106 games for the Atlanta Braves last season. He batted .325 (26-for-80) against left-handed pitchers. As a pinch hitter, he hit .368 (7-for-19) with 6 walks. In the field, he appeared in 84 games (69 starts) at second base and compiled a .973 fielding percentage, committing 10 errors in 367 total chances. He was on the disabled list from July 3-23 with right wrist tendinitis.

Johnson was one of the better offensive second basemen in the National League from 2007-08 after combining for a .282 batting average and .813 OPS and averaging 14 home runs and 68 RBI. Over parts of four seasons in the Majors with the Braves (2005, 2007-09), he has batted .264 (439-for-1661) with 270 runs scored, 97 doubles, 22 triples, 45 home runs, 206 RBI, 203 walks and 29 stolen bases in 490 career games. As a pinch hitter, he has batted .318 (14-for-44) with 14 walks. In the field, he has appeared in 361 games (331 starts) at second base, posting a .978 fielding percentage with 38 errors in 1,692 total chances. He has also played 79 games (73 starts) in the outfield.

D-Backs agree to terms with Howry

MLB: Cubs v Rangers June 21, 2007(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Bob Howry on a one-year contract with a club option for 2011, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Bob is a proven, veteran reliever,” Byrnes said. “We feel that he will strengthen our bullpen.”

Howry, 36, was 2-6 with a 3.39 ERA (24 ER in 63.2 IP) in 63 relief appearances for the San Francisco Giants last season. He limited right-handed batters to a .207 batting average (30-for-145) with 5 walks and 25 strikeouts while left-handed batters hit .225 (20-for-89) with 18 walks and 21 strikeouts. Against NL West opponents, he was 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA (11 ER in 31.1 IP) and a .212 opponents average (24-for-113) with 11 walks and 23 strikeouts.

Over parts of 12 seasons in the Majors with the Chicago White Sox (1998-2002), Boston Red Sox (2002-03), Cleveland Indians (2004-05), Chicago Cubs (2006-08) and Giants (2009), he is 44-49 with 66 saves and a 3.66 ERA (306 ER in 752.2 IP) in 731 career relief appearances. In 86 career games against NL West opponents, he is 7-4 with 4 saves, a 3.47 ERA (32 ER in 83.0 IP) and a .215 opponents batting average (66-for-307) with 19 walks and 76 strikeouts. Since 2005, he leads the Majors with 376 appearances, ahead of new teammates Chad Qualls’ 365 outings and Aaron Heilman’s 356 games. His 97 holds rank fourth among active relievers.

Howry is a Valley native and attended Deer Valley High School in Glendale.

[Audio] Glasser breaks ASU assists record in Sun Devil win

LSU v Arizona StateDerek Glasser wasted very little time in setting ASU’s all-time assists record on Monday night.

Glasser found Rihards Kuksiks for a 3-point field goal just :40 into the game, breaking Bobby Thompson’s 22-year old school record in Arizona State’s easy 69-42 win over UC-Santa Barbara at Wells Fargo Arena. Glasser finished with 7 assists, giving him 461 for his career.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” Glasser said after the game. “I give a lot of credit to all the guys that I play with, because without them I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Kuksiks paced the Sun Devils with 24 points–all on three point field goals. The junior from Riga, Latvia canned seven treys in the first half as ASU built a 37-20 halftime lead. The Sun Devils finished 15 of 36 from behind the arc.

Jamelle McMillan added a career-high 16 points, and chipped in with 6 assists and 5 steals as the Sun Devils improved their record to 9-3.

Orlando Johnson led the Gauchos with 16 points.

ASU will play a rare mid-week day game on Wednesday, hosting the USC-Upstate Spartans at 2:00 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

Suns melt down in 4th in Portland

tntlogoThe let one get away Thursday night in Portland, squandering a 15-point 4th quarter lead in a 105-102 loss to the Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden.

Former St. Mary’s High School and University of Arizona star Jerryd Bayless spearheaded the effort for the Blazers, scoring a career-high 29 points, including 16 points in the 4th quarter.

Brandon Roy added 27 for Portland. had 27 to pace Phoenix and added 20.

The loss was the Suns’ 17th straight in games televised on TNT.

In all, the Suns led for 37:15 of the ball game, including the entire the first 19:34 of the second half, but Bayless’ reverse layup with just under 4 minutes to play gave the Blazers a 94-92 lead, one that they would not relinquish.

The Suns are now 17-9 on the season, and have fallen under .500 (8-9) on the road. Portland improved their record to 16-11.

Phoenix returns home for their longest homestand of the season to this point, a 4-gamer, starting with the Washington Wizards on Saturday night at U.S. Airways Center.

Boyer, 28, was a combined 0-2 with a 4.12 ERA (25 ER in 54.2 IP) and .265 opponents average (56-for-211) with 20 walks and 29 strikeouts in 48 relief outings for the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals and D-backs last season. In 30 games for the D-backs, he was 0-1 with a 2.68 ERA (11 ER in 37.0 IP) and .273 opponents average (39-for-143) with 12 walks and 18 strikeouts. In 23 road appearances, he was 0-2 with a 1.75 ERA (5 ER in 25.2 IP) and .226 opponents average (21-for-93) with 8 walks and 13 strikeouts.

Over parts of five seasons in the Majors with the Braves (2005-09), Cardinals (2009) and D-backs (2009), he is 6-10 with 1 save and a 4.76 ERA (90 ER in 170.1 IP) in 174 career relief appearances as opponents have batted .266 (175-for-657) with 64 walks and 132 strikeouts.

Report: Ice Edge to sign letter of intent to buy Coyotes

picture-1TSN’s Darren Dreger reported during the intermission of the game between Ottawa and Philadelphia that Ice Edge Holdings, LLC., a group of Canadian and American investors, is expected within the next few days to sign a letter of intent to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes, who are currently controlled by the NHL.

Dreger also reports that the future of the Coyotes will be one of the main discussions at the NHL’s Board of Governors meetings next week, and that a contingency plan will be devised in the event that an effort to keep the Coyotes in the Valley is not completed.

Coyotes sign Stone to entry level contract

stone_michael_200GLENDALE, ARIZONA — Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Michael Stone to an entry level contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Stone, 19, is currently in his fourth season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he has recorded 13-21-34 and 46 penalty minutes (PIM) in 32 games. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Stone is tied for 1st in scoring among all WHL defensemen and ranks 3rd on his team in points.

Last season, Stone registered career-highs in goals (19), assists (42), points (61) and PIM (87) in 69 games for the Hitmen and finished the season ranked 4th in scoring among all WHL defensemen. In 227 career WHL games with Calgary, Stone has recorded 44-106-150 and 193 PIM. He has also collected 5-18-23 and 40 PIM in 49 career WHL playoff games and helped Calgary advance to the 2009 WHL Championship Series.

Stone, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was selected by the Coyotes in the third round (69th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Four Sun Devils win All-Pac-10 honors

pac10_logoArizona State senior defensive end Dexter Davis was named the the All-Pac-10 Conference First Team Defense today. Davis was the only Sun Devil to land on the First Team.

The Thunderbird High School product finished the season with 23 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He finished his Sun Devil career with 31 quarterback sacks.

Wide receiver Chris McGaha, offensive tackle Shaun Lauvao and punt returner Kyle Williams were all named to the Second Team All-Pac-10 squad. McGaha finished 4th in the conference with 56 receptions, and was 8th in the Pac-10, with 56.1 receiving yards per game. Williams was 5th in the conference, averaging 10.0 yards per return.

Linebackers Travis Goethel and Mike Nixon, along with running back Dimitri Nance and defensive tackle Lawrence Guy all received honorable mention.

dbacksalt(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have declined to offer arbitration to a trio of players, left-handed pitchers Doug Davis and Scott Schoeneweis and infielder Chad Tracy, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes.

Davis, 34, went 9-14 with a 4.12 ERA (93 ER in 203.1 IP) in 34 starts last season. He limited the opposition to a .267 batting average with 103 walks and 146 strikeouts.

Schoeneweis, 36, went 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA (19 ER in 24.0 IP) in 45 relief appearances last season. He held opponents to a .287 batting average with 13 walks and 14 strikeouts.

Tracy, 29, hit .237 (61-for-257) with 15 doubles, 8 home runs and 39 RBI in 98 games last season. He saw action in a combined 71 games (61 starts) in the field at first base (66 games, 56 starts) and third base (8 games, 5 starts).

Coyotes hammered in Edmonton

coyoteslogoIf you blinked, you missed it. Sheldon Souray and Ales Hemsky scored seven seconds apart in the 1st period and goalie Jeff Deslauriers made 36 saves for the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes at Rexall Place on Monday night.

Ethan Moreau started the scoring for Edmonton, who had lost 8 of their last 11 games, by beating Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov at 7:59 of the opening period. Souray and Hemsky then did their thing, and Shawn Horcoff capped off the effort with 1 second left in the second period, when he scored a power play goal.

The shutout was the first of Deslauriers’ career, and only the 2nd time the Coyotes have been shutout this season.

Next up for Phoenix is a visit to Calgary to take on the Flames at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Wednesday night.
