By Dean

Chicago White Sox starter Freddy Garcia was strong in three innings allowing five hits and one run, but the bullpen was even better. Over the next six innings four Sox hurlers would allow only two hits shutting out the Rockies the rest of the way. The Rockies bullpen also had a strong outing allowing only five hits over their five scoreless innings, but the effort was to late. Rockies starter Aaron Cook allowed six runs on six hits and three walks in his three innings.

Sox center fielder Alex Rios would go 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs batted in scoring both times he reached base. Juan Pierre lead off and played in the DH position going 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

The Cincinnati Reds wasted no time getting on the board in Tucson today against the Arizona Diamondbacks getting to starter Edwin Jackson. Jackson struggled for the first time this spring allowing the Reds to score two in the first, three in the second and another two in the third. Reds right field slugger Jay Bruce would take Jackson yard in the second inning for his second round-tripper of the spring.

The D-backs sat many of their regulars today and struggled to get anything going at the plate. Sean Coughlin played DH today and would do the most damage going 2-for-4 with a double that drove in two runs in the fifth inning.

The Los Angeles Angels were able to down the San Diego Padres today by a score of 4-3 behind timely hitting and strong pitching. Jered Weaver started out very slowly for the Angels allowing three runs on four hits and five walks in 3.1 innings, but the Angels bullpen would pull up their laces and buckle down to hold the Padres to only two hits in the final 5.2 innings. Padres starter Jon Garland cruised through three innings before allowing two runs in the forth.

The Angels knocked in four runs by four different batters including a game tying hit by Kendry Morales. Padres second baseman David Eckstein would knock in two runs for the Padres. The Angels finally got their third win of the spring moving to 3-9 while the Padres fell to 4-9.

Oakland A’s starter Ben Sheets is struggling to come back from injury and struggle he did today against the Cincinnati Reds. Sheets had what was probably his poorest outing of his career as the former ace did not retire any any of the ten batters he faced and allowed ten runs on eight hits and a walk. Reds starter Mike Lincoln is lucky he was staked to an early 10-0 lead as he allowed four runs on five hits in his three innings of work.

Reds center fielder and leadoff hitter Chris Dickerson went 4-for-4 on the day with two RBI’s and three runs scored. Dickerson and Wladimir Balentien homered for the Reds while Jonny Gomes continued to impress this spring with a 2-for-3 day. The Reds moved to 5-4-1 while the A’s fell to 6-5-1.

Dodgers shut out crosstown rivals

As good as the Los Angeles Angels were in the 2009 Cactus League season they have been equally as bad in 2010. The Halos fell to 2-8-2 on the spring with their shutout loss to the Dodgers today. Dodgers starter Ramon Ortiz continued to look impressive today as he allowed only two hits and no walks while striking out five in his four innings of work. On the day the team would strike out 11 Angels while only allowing seven hits.

Four Dodgers would knock in one run each including a seventh inning homer by left fielder Angelo Songco. Former Angel Garret Anderson would get things started with an RBI against his long-time team in the first inning.

Milwaukee Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo looked impressive in his four innings of work against the Cleveland Indians today in Phoenix. Gallardo struck out five Indian batters in his four innings of work allowing one run on one hit and walking none. Reliever Scott Schoeneweis picked up where Gallardo left off striking out two in his one inning of work. Indians starter David Huff did not have as much success allowing five runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings.

Brewers catcher Gregg Zaun continued to swing a hot bat knocking in his ninth run of the spring. Shortstop Alcides Escobar would later tie Zaun for the team lead in RBI’s with his ninth.   Third baseman Adam Heether went 2-for-3 on the day scoring both times.

Cincinnati Reds starter Matt Maloney is hoping to land a spot in the starting rotation, and if today is any indication, he may just do that. Maloney went three scoreless innings of work allowing three hits and walking two while striking out two. The Reds pitching staff looked strong today allowing only one run in the first eight innings before Jordan Smith allowed four hits and hour runs in the ninth.

Brandon Phillips played DH for the Reds today and went 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs batted in. Sox right fielder Stefan Gartrell went 1-for-2 with a two run double in the 4-run ninth.
