They couldn’t have more contrasting styles. But on Saturday, Mark Philippoussis and Michael Chang will face each other for the Group B championship and a berth in Sunday’s championship match at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
Philippoussis moved his tournament record to 2-0 this week by disposing of Jimmy Arias in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The 33-year old Australian said he wasn’t too happy with his biggest weapon, his serve, following his win Wednesday night against Aaron Krickstein. That wasn’t the case on Friday. Philippoussis was pleased.
“I was happy with the way I served today,” Philippoussis said. “A couple of times I double faulted by kind of pushing, but I’m happy.”
Arias, who lost his opening match to Michael Chang on Thursday night, played well on Friday despite the short turnaround. Arias agreed that Philippoussis’ serve was on during Friday’s match. “What’s it like to face it?”, Arias asked rhetorically about the Aussie’s serve. “Basically, he hits the corner with it and you say ‘ooh, congratulations’, and you go to other side. It amazes me that today’s players can return that. They can. They’re there. I don’t know how. I’m certainly nowhere near it.”
In the second match of the Friday afternoon session, a workmanlike Michael Chang defeated Aaron Krickstein 6-3, 6-3 to remain unbeaten in Surprise. Chang pinpointed his ground strokes, especially early in the match and still showed flashes of his tremendous ability to get to any and every ball on the court.
Chang finds himself looking forward to Saturday’s Group B championship against the hard-serving Philippoussis. “I know he’s healthy, which is good for him and for the tour. He’s playing some good tennis, and it very much will be a contrast of styles,” Chang said.
Group A will also feature a matchup of unbeatens to determine who will advance to Sunday’s Final. Jim Courier defeated Wayne Ferreira 6-4, 6-3 in the first match of the night, and John McEnroe downed Jeff Tarango in a battle of lefty Stanford products 6-4, 6-4.
“I thought I served pretty well,” said McEnroe after the match. “Whenever I serve good, I can keep people off balance. If (I) can hit a couple different spins, like a slice out wide, kick it out wide on the deuce court…if I can do a pretty good job placing the ball it should be pretty difficult to break me.”
McEnroe, who won the inaugural event in Surprise two years ago, actually lost to Courier in the round-robin in that tournament. They’ll face off in the first match of the evening session on Saturday. Chang and Philippoussis take to the court in the second match of the daytime session.
Saturday’s schedule will also include two exhibition mixed doubles matches featuring international tennis and fashion icon Anna Kournikova and Ashley Harkleroad partnering with Jeff Tarango, Wayne Ferreira, Jimmy Arias and Aaron Krickstein.
