STAT of the Day: A completely non-political look at the Suns’ sartorial choice for Game 2

Phoenix Suns at Portland TrailblazersThe Phoenix Suns announced on Tuesday that they would wear their alternate orange jerseys with “Los Suns” emblazoned across the chest for Game 2 of their Western Conference Semifinals series against the San Antonio Spurs tonight at U.S. Airways Center.

Of course, the “Los Suns” jerseys have been seen before, as the Suns have worn them in the past as part of the NBA Noche Latina, an initiative support the influx of Latin American players in the National Basketball Association. And, with it being Cinco de Mayo, the decision to wear the jerseys is a nice gesture to the Latino community in the Phoenix area and the state.

Call me superstitious, but I firmly believe it’s bad mojo to mess with your uniforms in any fashion for a big game. Especially when your team hasn’t had too much success in the jerseys you’ve chosen to wear in said big game.

STAT of the Day: During the 2009-10 season (including playoffs), the Phoenix Suns are 34-12 (.739 winning percentage) while wearing their white uniforms, 18-11 (.621) when dressed in their purple uniforms, and 6-8.(.429) when wearing their alternate orange uniforms.

The Suns did have early success in their orange unis, winning the first three games in which they wore them (road wins over Boston, Washington and Philadelphia). But then, Phoenix lost 6 straight games in the alternate orange, before winning two of their last three in the uniforms.

In the Playoffs to this point, the Suns are 3-1 in white uniforms, 1-0 in purple, and 1-1 in orange.
