The Arizona State Sun Devils withstood a furious late charge from San Diego State, beating the Aztecs 55-52 at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe on Saturday.
After Derek Glasser sank two free throws with 10:56 to go in the game, ASU led 46-28. SDSU then went on an 11-0 run to cut the Sun Devils’ lead to 46-39. But the Aztecs kept charging, and closed the gap to one point after two free throws by D.J. Gay with :13 left.
But Glasser made two free throws with :12 left, and Gay missed a potential game-tying three pointer with two seconds left to give the Devils the win.
Rihards Kuksiks and Jamelle McMillan each had 12 points to pace the Sun Devils, who pushed their 2009-10 record to 8-3. Glasser had 11 points and 5 assists in the game, and in the process, tied Bobby Thompson’s ASU record for most career assists with 454.
Chase Tapley came off the San Diego State to score a team-high 17 points. SDSU outrebounded the Sun Devils 39-21, but committed 23 turnovers.
ASU returns to the court Monday night in Tempe as they host the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
