While the Arizona Cardinals were suffering a heartbreaking last second loss at the hands of Vince Young, a former Cardinals offensive coordinator was enjoying a much different, yet just as suspenseful, ending.
Marc Trestman, the Cardinals’ OC from 1998-2000 and current head coach of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, found himself on the losing and then winning end of a last second miracle.
At around the same time as Vince Young connected with wide receiver Kenny Britt, Trestman’s team lined up for a 33-yard field goal to win the CFL’s Grey Cup. Kicker Damon Duval missed the kick. Unlike the Cardinals, Trestman got a second chance. A penalty on the final play allowed the Alouettes to retry the kick and win the CFL championship 28-27.
“There was ebb and flow in this game, but in the end, Lady Luck came into play for a moment and we were able to take advantage of it,” Marc Trestman told reporters.
Trestman has appeared in two Grey Cups in his two seasons as Montreal’s head coach losing last season to Calgary.
Trestman’s reward for winning in the CFL? If rumors are true, he may get an offer to return to the NFL as head coach of the Raiders. Al Davis and Oakland or the CFL’s three down football in cold Canada? I think I’d stay in Canada.
