The Diamondbacks, according to FoxSports.com, will attempt to add a starting pitcher in what has proven to be Josh Byrnes preferred method of transaction, trade, rather than through free agency.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, sources close to the team say they will look to trade for a “back-of-the-rotation” type pitcher and aren’t willing to spend an large amount to acquire the new addition.
Their source doesn’t cite any names that the D-Backs are currently targeting but they do say that the team hasn’t inquired about pitchers such as Pirates’ southpaws Zach Duke and Paul Maholm and they are hesitant to give up what it would take to get Tigers right hander Edwin Jackson.
Expect a deal similar to what brought Doug Davis to Arizona from Milwaukee. Nothing flashy, not too much given up and not too high of a salary.
The Diamondbacks seem content to be like the young single guy who decides to go with the “safe girl” rather than the hot girl. Sure, the hot girl has more potential upside, but she’ll also cost you more in the long run. Not to mention, she could more easily disappoint you.
Rosenthal and Morosi speculate that the D-Backs will pursue such unassuming “safe guys” as Milwaukee’s Dave Bush (think of a young, right handed, Doug Davis), Toronto’s Brian Tallet (has only been a full time starter in one of his seven MLB seasons) and the Mets’ Tim Redding (spent part of last year with Mets’ Triple-A affiliate).
Just remember, low-risk, low reward.
