Like clockwork, every November, you’ll hear people talk about how weird things always happen in the Arizona State-Arizona rivalry.
And once again, those people who uttered that cliche’ this year were right on the money.
After fighting back from a 14-0 deficit, Arizona State tied the game late in the fourth quarter on a tremendous catch by receiver Kyle Williams. Arizona lined up to punt with a little more than a minute to go in the game after ASU’s defense forced a three and out. Keenyn Crier’s punt was muffed by Williams, who had called for a fair catch, and was recovered by Mike Turner at the ASU 22-yard line.
Four plays later, Alex Zendejas kicked a 32-yard field goal, and Arizona scored their second straight win in the Territorial Cup rivalry, with a 20-17 win at Sun Devil Stadium.
Head coach Dennis Erickson said after the game that “he was at a loss for words”. The Sun Devils finish their disappointing 2009 season at 4-8. Arizona moves to 7-4 and will wrap up their regular season next Saturday in Los Angeles against USC.
