It’s not often here in the sports blogosphere that we get to discuss a situation in which the head coach of a football team took the hardest hit of anyone on the field in any given game.
With that, we give you the curious case of Dennis Erickson, who was rendered briefly unconscious during today’s 27-14 win over Washington State.
The 62-year-old head coach was nailed pretty good on the sideline by Gerell Robinson midway through the 3rd quarter. Originally, the ASU radio broadcast designated a WSU player had run into him.
Tim Healey, Jeff Van Raaphorst and Doug Franz described the scene as Erickson laying on the sideline and then being directed to the bench by the team doctor. He got up and stood on the sideline for one play a few moments later, then retreated to the bench once again.
However, in classic DE fashion, he basically told the doctors, in no better way, to screw off.
According to Franz, the ASU radio sideline reporter, he overheard the doctor telling him that he needed to stay sitting on the bench for a little while.
Erickson curtly responded, “The hell I do!”
Just another strange moment in what is becoming a season full of them.
