Sun Devils in NFL Training Camp

    l3935256

Here’s a quick run down of Sun Devils in NFL training camp:

Andrew Carnahan (Giants): Twisted a knee in practice today…every article I have seen that mentions him talks about the fact that some defensive lineman either blew past him or knocked him over on the way to the backfield.  It would be nice to see him make a roster but it doesn’t seem likely at this point.

Derek Hagan (Giants):  He is reportedly doing very well in training camp but is seeing limited action.  He only has 3 receptions in 3 games, but with Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer gone, he could make the roster.  A hamstring injury to David Tyree helps his chances, as well as reports that the Giants may cut ties with Sinorice Moss.  The main thing working against him is the development of Mario Manningham, as well as rookies Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden.  I give it a slight shot he makes the team, but we should see Hagan contributing to some team this season.

Rudy Carpenter (Cowboys): Rudy hasn’t seen any game action this preseason, and is not likely to make the team.  The Cowboys drafted Stephen McGee out of Texas A & M to be the third QB on the depth chart.  Rudy should see some time against the Vikings as a way to audition for other NFL teams, and could be used as a QB on the Cowboys practice squad.

Ryan Torain (Free Agent): Torain was cut by the Broncos on August 12th after straining his hamstring in practice.  This is a guy who deserves a shot with another team, just wasn’t given much of a chance with the stable of running backs the Broncos brought in during the offseason.  Some Texans fans have already been clamoring for him, but there’s no word of Torain signing with another team yet.

Josh Barrett (Broncos): Barrett made a great play during yesterday’s game against the Bears on special teams, swatting at a Britton Colquitt punt and preventing it from becoming a touchback, with the ball eventually being downed at the 2 yard line.  Josh has the talent to at least contribute on special teams.  Barrett was starting at safety at the end of the year last year, but with Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill signed in the offseason as well as the Broncos using two draft picks on safeties, Josh will have to fight for a spot on the roster. His shoulder was reportedly heavily wrapped in the locker room after last night’s contest.

Rudy Burgess (Bears): Rudy is currently listed as a 2nd string corner back for the Bears, but the converted wide receiver’s skills have come into question, highlighted by giving up a 54 yard reception in last night’s game against Denver.

Paul Fanaika (Eagles): The 7th round draft pick is not expected to make the Eagles 53-man, but should be on the practice squad.

Michael Marquardt (Free Agent): Spent last season on the Eagles practice squad and was cut by the Redskins last week.

Todd Heap (Ravens): Heap is looking to return to form this season, and had a great night on Saturday with 4 catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.  L.J. Smith is nipping at his heels for the #1 spot, but as long as he’s healthy he should be in on most plays.

Terrell Suggs (Ravens): Signed a 6-year 63 million deal in the offseason, making him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history (on per season basis).  Suggs has a nagging heel injury that has kept him out of action this preseason, but is expected to play in the finale at Atlanta.

Andrew Walter (Patriots): Andrew Walter is now the #2 QB on the depth chart after the Patriots released Kevin O’Connell.  Besides a Bernard Pollard shot to the knee, Tom Brady has been pretty reliable in that position.  It’s going to take another catastrophic injury to Brady for Walter to see any significant playing time, but he’s waiting in the wings.

Robert James (Falcons): James suffered a concussion last year that landed the rookie on injured reserve.  James has a well documented history of migraines, which came back to haunt him in 2008.  He made 2 solo tackles against the Rams last week, but didn’t get his name in the box score against the Chargers this past weekend.

Shaun McDonald (Steelers): It looks like McDonald could fill a roster spot for the Steelers as a wide receiver/kick returner.  More than likely he will fill a 5th receiver slot and be used on returns when needed.

Zach Miller (Raiders): Everyone’s fantasy sleeper at tight end this season.  The Raiders are going to be god awful this season, so he may be the lone bright spot.  He could end up being their leading receiver this season; he had 5 receptions for 74 yards in a this weekend’s “game” against the Saints, in which the Raiders lost 45-7.

Justin Tryon (Redskins): Has done well on special teams this preseason, but gave up several receptions to the Patriots receiving corps this weekend.

Jamar Williams (Bears): He was out with an injured foot against the Broncos, but is still favored to make the 53-man roster.
