Devils Pick Up Another WR

This isn’t an Oregon Ducks blog, nor will it ever be. Addicted to Quack is our good buddy here in the blogosphere and a proud member of the Pac-10 Roundtable, so if you want more coverage of the nine players that have departed Eugene during this offseason, you should definitely check them out.

However, this quickly became an Arizona State story today because one of those nine has enrolled here in Tempe.

Former Ducks WR Aaron Pflugrad, who was actually offered a scholarship at ASU coming out of high school, will have to sit out the 2009 season per NCAA rules, but the diminutive yet quick wide out will be available to Dennis Erickson for two seasons starting in 2010.

He joins a duo of receiver commits that ASU has already received for the 2010 season, one that promises to be lean on experienced offensive playmakers.

Pflugrad was expected to be a starter for new head coach Chip Kelly in 2009 as a junior but decided to leave the team when his father, one of the team’s coaches, was let go after Mike Bellotti transitioned from head football coach to athletic director.

Ironically enough on a side note, former Stanford QB bust Scott Frost took over the elder Pflugrad’s WR coaching job.

His father, Robin, was the recruiting coordinator and receivcers coach under Bruce Snyder at ASU from 1995-2000.

Arizona State and Oregon met twice in the two years that Aaron was on the Oregon roster. In 2007, when the Ducks and Devils squared off in that pivotal matchup where both teams came in undefeated, Pflugrad contributed minimally, making two catches for 5 yards.

Last season, in the Ducks 54-20 beatdown of Arizona State, he caught one pass for 12 yards. It was one of only six catches he made all season.

This is certainly an interesting one to watch. Despite his meager stats, Oregon only recruits wide outs who have speed and sure hands, regardless of whether or not his dad is a coach. A good set of hands is certainly what this program could use, so hopefully Aaron will come through and contribute over his final two years of eligibility.

Doesn’t hurt that his sister is an absolute bombshell, as well.
