I’m usually not one to press the panic button, but I have a bad, bad feeling about Brandon Webb. Here is the string of events as they stand:
- Brandon Webb gets rocked in his first outing of the year
- Brandon Webb reveals he has a slight shoulder problem, hopes to make next start
- Brandon Webb is scratched from his next start, hopes to make following start
- Brandon Webb goes on 15 day DL
Let me tell you how this story ends: Brandon Webb out for the year. This is almost parallel to what Amare Stoudemire went through before the start of the 2005-06 season; his injury got progressively worse before he was ruled out for the year. The same “it’s just going to get worse” feeling is hanging over Brandon Webb right now. It sure doesn’t help that insurance companies have had concerns over Brandon Webb’s shoulder since the off season.
I really, really hope that I am wrong. I just can’t shake how this feels. The season is incredibly early, but there is already a bad feeling associated with it. The first blow may very well be Brandon Webb not being able to return this year. The D-Backs can’t hit and don’t have a bullpen, they need their starting pitching. If Brandon Webb has an extended stay on the DL this 2009 season will be sunk quickly.
