Phoenix Suns

Hi, my name is Earth. Have we met?

Suns fans, allow me to vent for a moment…

My ultimate pet peeves regarding Suns fans are three-fold:

    - When they change their opinion of the Suns, and/or a player, like the clothes they wear,

  •     - Create controversy where there isn’t any,
  •     - Turn on a player so quick it’s like they were getting paid to do it, and constantly find the negative in any good.

Maybe I’m alone in this and it’s not a big deal to anyone else.  Maybe it shouldn’t bug me and I’m loyal to a fault or too positive.  Who knows.

Now, please note, I’m not speaking to the majority of Suns fans out there with this post.  The majority of you are loyal, positive, and cheer for the Suns instead of kicking them when they’re down and only loving them when they’re up (like now).

It’s really to the few that continually find unhappiness whether the Suns win or lose.  It’s those that damn the Suns if they do, and damn them if they don’t.  Love a guy when he’s playing well, then degrade him when he’s struggling.  It’s their choice if they want to feel that way, but good gracious it gets frustrating sometimes.  There is a difference between posing a logical question and creating much adieu over nothing and jumping on the bandwagon when players/team are playing well, then jumping right off and insulting them when they’re not.  I’ve seen this around the internets for the past few weeks, and feel it warrants a call out.

Case in point:

  • Suns fans initially like and his play, then hate him and say he sucks, now when he has a good game like last night….like him again.
  • Suns fans freak out when Nash isn’t going to suit up for a couple games and wonder if the Suns will win at all, then the Suns beat the Lakers without him, and some are questioning if Nash is the right fit for the system and “>Shaq.
  • Suns fans turn against Porter and his style of play, then he gets fired and Alvin Gentry brings the running style back, and now complain that the running system won’t work in the playoffs.

Let me bring those fans back down to Earth for a moment…

First, regarding , yes he has struggled over the past couple of months.  But news flash people - so have everyone else on the Suns!  Give the guy a break.  At the very least, he plays his ass off every single game.  Yes, he has poor shooting nights, but so does everyone else.  However, I always know that his heart is in the right place.  He wants to win and his competitive spirit is undeniable.  To me, it’s not okay when one day you can say how Barnes “sucks” then after a good game, say how good he is.  Hypocrisy.  Either you stand by him or you don’t.  Maybe I have that feeling from playing basketball my entire life.  But don’t say how much he sucks one day when he’s off, then all of a sudden like him again when he’s on.

Now, regarding Nash and the question whether or not he and can find a happy medium…oh. my. God.  As I said to one of my Twitter friends (@jagrmeister), the won 2-3 games in a row without Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli - they must be better without them!  Please.  Questioning Nash in the current system is like questioning Dwight Howard’s rebounding ability.  Why did the Suns win last night?  Because players stepped up in Nash’s absence.  Don’t tell me you didn’t want Nash in the game in the last 60 seconds to control the ball and prevent turnovers.  Don’t tell me you didn’t want Nash in the game when we were down by 5-8 points in the third.   Creating controversy between Nash and is irresponsible as a fan, and flat out disappointing.

Finally, for those that are just as unhappy with Gentry’s system as they were with Porter’s - that’s gotta be a sad world you live in.  Complain about one coach and his style, then it gets changed/fixed to the style you wanted all along, and you’re still unhappy.  As I’ve said many times before on my blog, our best and most effective way to win may not beat every team, but it’s the best we have.  And no one can argue that the system we’ve been running under Gentry puts us in the best position to win.

I guess what I’m saying is, I agree there are questions on this team and things we should debate.  How about we do that while supporting the entire team?  Anyone else agree with me on this?  I’d love to hear your thoughts, even if you disagree.
