Alvin Gentry, who was in his 5th season as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns, has been named the new interim head coach of the team after Terry Porter was fired earlier this morning.
This will be Gentry’s third stint as an interim head coach. In the 1994-95 season, he took over the reigns of the Miami Heat after Kevin Loughery was fired, and finished 15-21. Pat Riley took the coaching job the next season. In the 1997-98 season, Doug Collins was fired as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons, and Gentry took over for the last 37 games, compiling a 16-21 record, and was hired on a full-time basis. He lasted a little more than one season with the Pistons, going 57-51, and leading Detroit to the playoffs in 1999, where they were eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
After being fired, Gentry took over the Los Angeles Clippers for two and a half seasons, going 89-133, before being let go mid-season in 2003.
His career coaching record is 177-226, and 2-3 in the playoffs.
Gentry is the lone holdover from Mike D’Antoni’s staff.
