This week a majority of the talk has surrounded Amare Stoudemire, Robert Sarver and Steve Kerr’s short comings. But what about Terry Porter?
His offense doesn’t fit the players, and the defense he apparently preaches has been non existent –the team has given up 100 or more points in ten of the last fifteen games.
In those last 15 games Porter’s Suns are 6-9 overall. Not great, but not horrible right?
Wrong. When you examine the history of the Phoenix Suns you will see that mediocrity at the level at which Porter has shown in the last 15 games has not been tolerated.
Of the last four Suns coaches that were fired, only Frank Johnson had a worse record in his final fifteen games, 5-10.
1995-96 Paul Westphal: 6-9
1999-2000 Danny Ainge: 9-6
2001-2002 Scott Skiles: 7-8
2003-2004 Frank Johnson: 5-10
The fact that Porter hasn’t taken more of the brunt of the front office’s wrath is confusing. The failure of this team starts with the head coach’s abilities. He looks to have lost the team and instead of pointing the finger at him, the franchise has pointed it’s finger at Amare Stoudemire.
While Stoudemire has worn out his welcome, so has Porter. Don’t take my word for it, history proves it.
