Steve Schoenfeld, for those of you who didn’t know him, or may not remember, was a sportswriter here in the Valley. He covered the NFL and the Arizona Cardinals for the Arizona Republic before his move to CBSSportsline.com.
He was tragically killed in a car-pedestrian accident in October of 2000; cut down in the prime of his life.
Schoeny was a great writer, a great friend, and a walking encyclopedia of football knowledge. His talent, of course, was writing, but he became almost an accidental star on radio. His exchanges with Tony Femino and Larry Gaydos on Sports Radio 1360 KGME in the late 1990’s were golden.
On Radio Row in Tampa on Thursday, I ran into Tony, whom I hadn’t seen or talked to in a long time. While we were catching up, Tony brought up Schoeny, and how this Cardinals’ trip to the Super Bowl would have been a real feather in Steve’s cap, and that we shouldn’t forget that. I was ashamed that I hadn’t thought of it first.
Tony was right. I was a little late in doing so, but I’m thinking of you Schoeny. A lot of other people are too.
