After 10 years of hoping, wishing and dreaming that the Arizona Wildcats would have a winning season and make a bowl game I really (outside of my job) could care less about tomorrow night’s Las Vegas Bowl against BYU.
Now, it’s not really a UofA football problem as much as it is a college football problem. I’m sure everyone has heard the anti-BCS rants and the cries for a playoff system before. Sorry I’m late to the party, but this is my first fan experience with the college bowl system for, well lets just say I was 15 and trying to figure out how to score with girls last time Arizona went bowling, and now I’m 25 and trying to figure out how to score points with the fiance’.
There is nothing exciting about a game that pretty much means bubkis.
I would much rather watch a 1 versus 16 massacre in the opening round of the NCAA basketball tournament than tomorrow’s game. As a matter of fact, I’d much rather watch an opening round regional game from the college baseball playoffs than a meaningless bowl game. Hell, even the NIT provides for more entertainment and suspense.
Sure, some matchups may be intriguing, but they mean as much as the pick-up football games I play with my friends. Unfortunately, my friends and I don’t receive a gift basket full of video games for our participation.
It’s nice to say my alma mater is going to a bowl game– but is that such a great accomplishment anyways? Fifty-seven percent of all college football teams make it to a bowl. Nothing like celebrating mediocrity by going on an extended vacation and getting gifts for doing so.
So here’s to the Arizona Wildcats for getting to a bowl game after 10 years. Enjoy your reward of playing for absolutely nothing…oh, and this lovely gift basket.
