Steve Nash: What He Says, What He Really Means

Share

Over the last 24 hours or so I have read a lot of comments and opinions on the trade that brought J-Rich to Phoenix for Raja and Boris.

Being a Suns fan and a Nash enthusiast I was especially interested to hear what Steve had to say about it and what he really meant. As Steve doesn’t use words by chance, I am sure his recent comments intended to send a few messages upstairs.

That’s why, reading a recent, great as usual, article “Nash drained after trade of best friend Bell” by Paul Coro on the Arizona Republic I tried to figure out what Nash really had in mind in a little “What he said, What he really meant” game:

What Steve said:It’s tough, while I’ll welcome my new teammates with open arms, it’s tough when you lose your best friend. It’s tough when you lose two of your best buddies. It’s tough and it hurts. It’s tough.

What Steve meant: You’re making me very unhappy and uncomfortable. Is it because I was the leader of the old team? Is it because I was the field general of Coach D’Antoni?

———-

What Steve said: “I hope it’s not a situation where they are just trying to blow it up. I think we still have got a chance to be a really good team”

What Steve meant: Steve Kerr doesn’t have a clue how to build a championship team. We were much closer to winning it all a couple of years ago than we’ll ever be with Kerr at the helm and whoever he wants as a coach.

———-

What Steve said: “(Richardson) is a great scorer. I think he’ll fit in offensively obviously. Our transition game, he’ll fit right in”

What Steve meant: J-Rich can score 20 every night, so we won’t have a problem there, but please Mr. Kerr, don’t forget we only play with one basketball, You go tell Amaré he’ll have to give up 5-6 shots a game ! Same with Hill and Myself. And by the way, So we start running again? Our experiment with defense is over I assume. The next time coach Porter starts talking about defense I’ll ask him why we traded the only good defender on the roster. Sure, next time J-Rich will guard Kobe.

———-

What Steve said: “I have a hard time committing to this as a business. I take this personally and I take my career home with me”

What Steve meant: I am a well-rounded human being, for real, not just another average NBA player, one of those “exploited” 10 mil a year, “play don’t think”, athlete who had never read a book in their entire life. Plus I am the leader of this team, you should have asked first.

———-

What Steve said: “Like I said before about the 2010 speculation, it’s so far away. I just want to try to win as many games as I can and then I’ll worry about it after”.

What Steve meant: I am gone. I’ll try to show the world I can still be a great player and have fun for a couple more years. “Start spreadin’ the news, I am leaving today…”

———-

Of course, I could be wrong, it’s just one fan’s attempt to understand what’s going on.

I still believe the Suns best, possibly the only, chance to win runs through Nash. What’s good for Steve Nash is good for the Suns.

Yours truly, Steve Fan
