Pac-10 Predictions: We’re in the nitty gritty

Only two weekends to go in the Pac-10, and we’ll find out if the Oregon State Beavers are headed to the BCS, we’ll find out if ASU or UCLA will be eliminated from bowl eligibility, we’ll find out if Notre Dame can break their losing streak to USC, and we’ll find out if Washington State can build on their Apple Cup victory over Washington.

Here’s a closer look at week 14 in the Pac-10…

UCLA (4-6, 3-4) vs. Arizona State (4-6, 3-4) – 7:30 PM Friday –
Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ.
This is a matchup of two teams desperately clinging to bowl hopes. It’s honestly also a matchup of two teams who have no business still desperately clinging to bowl hopes. UCLA has been atrocious this season, and Arizona State tied a school-record with six straight losses. The Bruins running game is nearly the worst in the country, averaging 85 yards per game, so they’ll have to rely on throwing the football on Friday night. That’s been a problem, as Kevin Craft has only 7 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions this season. It’s also ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter’s last game at Sun Devil Stadium, so look for him to go out in a blaze of glory just for his loyal, adoring fans. That’s sarcasm.

Oregon (8-3, 6-2) at Oregon State (8-3, 7-1) – 5:07 PM Saturday- Reser Stadium, Corvallis, OR. The Civil War has a little more meaning this season, especially for Oregon State. The Beavers can punch their ticket to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 44 years with a win over the Ducks. They’ll have to do it with out freshman tailback Jacquizz Rodgers, likely the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Rodgers left the Arizona game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury and never returned. OSU was able to win that game using James Rodgers as their main running threat. It won’t be that easy this week. Oregon’s Jeremiah Johnson, LaGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Masoli have run for a combined 2,238 yards and 32 touchdowns. It’ll be too much for the Beavers to handle. They’re still going to a bowl, but it won’t be in Pasadena.

Notre Dame (6-5) at USC (9-1, 7-1) – 6:00 PM Saturday – Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA. Finally, a nightmarish non-conference season for the Pac-10 comes to an end this weekend with two games, including this traditional matchup between the Irish and the Trojans. USC has started their own tradition recently in this rivalry–the tradition of blowing out Notre Dame. The Men of Troy have won 6 straight over the Golden Domers, by a combined score of 246-92. Much of the same this year.

Washington State (2-10, 1-8) at Hawaii (6-5) – 9:00 PM Saturday – Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, HI. Hawaii is not nearly the team they’ve been the last couple of years. Colt Brennan is in the NFL, and June Jones is coaching SMU. Last season, Warrior quarterbacks threw for 51 touchdowns combined, this year only 17. Still, Honolulu is a rough trip for anyone to make, especially one of the worst teams in the country. Hope you enjoyed your Apple Cup win Washington State. This one’s going to hurt.
