• Sun Devil Wallace Lights Up Scorpions

    Monster Jam Glendale,AZ - August 1st, 2009

Brett Wallace of the Peoria Saguaros is no stranger to Arizona as he returns to the Valley for the Arizona Fall League. Wallace, St. Louis’ first-round draft pick, played for Arizona State University in 2006 and 2007. Brett had a solid batting average for the duration of his time at ASU and hit 16 home runs with 78 RBIs in his 2007 season with the team. While he played both first base and outfield for the Sun Devils, Wallace has been trying out at the far corner this fall. Perhaps his most satisfying accomplishment today was hitting a three run homer off of Boston prospect Clay Buchholz, who threw a no hitter in the majors in 2007.

In Scottsdale, the Scorpions took an early lead as the Saguaros were ignited with a four run fourth inning by Wallace’s three-run blast. The Sags would score seven more times while the Scorpions trailed for the remainder of the game. Peoria’s designated hitter and White Sox prospect Jordan Danks drove in two runs while Cory VanAllen of the Washington Nationals took the win.

Meanwhile, the Desert Dogs do it again, with another win at home. Mesa scored only twice during the matchup against Phoenix. One run was scored by Phillies prospect Jason Donald, also of Team USA, who has been hot all fall. With free agency talks heating up, Donald’s name has been mentioned a number of times as the teams align their schedules for Spring Training. For the Desert Dogs, Mike McKenry went yard as well with a two run shot that gave the Dogs the lead. Phoenix would go on to score two more runs as they defeat the Mesa Solar Sox by a score of 2-5.

The final game of the day was a night game between the Surprise Rafters and the Peoria Javelinas in Peoria. With the game scoreless after three innings, the New York Yankees’ Phil Hughes pitched perfectly through four innings before being removed from the game in the top of the sixth inning after allowing only one hit and striking out eight. The Javelinas ended up dropping the game after a stellar performance by Phil Hughes, unable to come back from a two run deficit in the bottom of the ninth.
