Nearly forty years after the sport of BMX was introduced, it is being recognized on a grand worldwide stage. That’s right, BMX will be an Olympic sport for the first time in history when the games of the 29th Olympiad begin in Beijing, China next month.

The Olympics, unlike any other sporting event in the world, tends to spur participation. So if you’re camped out in front of your tv, and catch the BMX bug, there’s plenty of options for you in Phoenix.

The Valley has three outstanding BMX tracks for beginners and veterans alike to hone their skills. Black Mountain BMX is located in North Phoenix, 24024 North 11th Street, and it features practice on Wednesday nights, and racing on Friday and Saturday nights. Black Mountain BMX also plays host to the ABA Winter Nationals each year.

In the East Valley, there’s Chandler BMX, located at McQueen and Frye. Chandler BMX holds practice time on the track on Tuesday nights and racing on Fridays and Sundays.

In Goodyear, BMX enthusiasts will find Estrella Mountain BMX, located at 15660 West Roser Road. Estrella Mountain BMX holds open practice track time on Wednesday nights, and racing every Friday and Saturday. It is the only track in Arizona to be sanctioned by the National Bicycle League.

And finally, in Surprise, there’s Speedworld BMX, which is situated one mile west of the US 60 (Grand Avenue) on Happy Valley Road. There’s racing every Tuesday and Thursday night.
