With the Arizona Cardinals preparing to take on the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, there’s been a lot of speculation and conjecture on who will be the starting running back for the Cardinals this week and for the rest of the season. Will it be the unhappy Edgerrin James, who will move into the NFL’s all-time top ten rushers this season, or rookie Tim Hightower, who is tied for 4th in the league with 6 rushing touchdowns?
My answer is–who cares? I’m not trying to belittle James’ or Hightower’s skills, they’re both viable options at this point. My point is, with the receiving corps the Cardinals have, they could start me at running back and still be one of the top offenses in the league.
I combined the numbers of the top 3 receivers for each NFL team, and the results are astounding. Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston are far and away the best receiving trio in the league, by any standard.

Keep in mind Boldin has missed two games, otherwise these numbers would be even more inflated.
Who’s bringing up the rear in these categories you ask?
Catches: Oakland (Higgins, Walker, Schilens) 28
Yards: Seattle (Carlson, McMullen, Engram) 446
Touchdowns: Tennessee (Gage, Jones, McCareins) 1
All three Cardinals receivers have more catches individually than the Raiders’ trio has combined and more touchdowns individually than the Titans’ trio combined. Fitzgerald and Breaston each have more receiving yardage than the Seahawks’ trio has combined.
