Captain Shane Doan had 2 goals, and Kyle Turris scored his first NHL goal and added an assist as the Phoenix Coyotes won for the second time in as many nights, beating the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 at Honda Center in Anaheim.
Rookie Mikkel Boedker opened the scoring in the first period with his first NHL goal on assists from Steven Reinprecht and Todd Fedoruk. Doan tallied his first goal just 1:41 into the 2nd period after taking a long lead pass, and moving to his backhand to beat Anaheim goalie Jean Sebastian Giguere to give Phoenix a 2-0 advantage. The Coyotes made it 3-0 7:05 later when Giguere couldn’t control the puck in the crease and Turris shoveled it into the net.
Former Duck Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 33 shots for his 2nd win of the year. He is now 4-1-1 against his former team.
The Coyotes were outshot 35-24 in the game, and 15-5 in the 2nd period alone.
The Coyotes are 2-0 for only the third time since moving to Phoenix before the 1996-97 season. They’ve only started 3-0 once, in the 2003-04 season. The quick start didn’t mean prolonged success for the team, as they won only 19 more games the rest of the season, and finished with 68 points. The Coyotes will go for their third straight win on Wednesday night when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center.
