Joe McKnight ran for 143 yards on just 11 carries, and Mark Sanchez, despite a shaky performance, threw for one touchdown, and ran for another as 8th-ranked USC shut out Arizona State 28-0 at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
The Sun Devils could not take advantage of 5 turnovers, including 4 on consecutive possessions in the 3rd quarter. Kicker Thomas Weber missed two field goals, which turned out to be ASU’s best opportunity to score.
The Trojans led 14-0 in the 2nd quarter when USC’s defense put points on the board. Rudy Carpenter had a pass intercepted on the sideline by Kevin Thomas, who waltzed 45 yards into the end zone to make it 21-0.
Carpenter left the game in the third quarter after reaggravating an ankle injury that slowed him during the week. The senior finished the game 11 out of 20 for 126 yards and an interception. Junior backup Danny Sullivan finished up the game, and struggled mightily, completing 4 out of 17 passes for 28 yards and 2 picks.
The Sun Devils lost their 4th straight game to fall to 2-4 and 1-2 in the Pac-10, while USC raised their record to 4-1 and 2-1 in the conference.
