Thursday, the Phoenix Suns drafted Stanford big man Robin Lopez with the 15th overall pick in the NBA Draft. It got me to thinking about Stanford’s reputation as a training ground for the NBA.
Certain schools like Wake Forest, Georgetown and North Carolina develop players to succeed at the next level. While schools like Duke and Indiana don’t seem to develop to many All-Stars in the NBA. How does Stanford stack up? Not good.
Since 1998, Stanford has had 8 players drafted in the first round, including the Lopez Twins. That’s certainly a very respectable number. But when you look at what these players contributed at the next level, it doesn’t exactly make you salivate.

Obviously, you hope that all of your draft picks will develop into star players. Is that realistic? Absolutely not. I think Suns’ fans will be happy if Lopez can just make a constant contrbution, as opposed to the erratic efforts allowed by the previous coaching regime.
Plus, he does have the hair.
