D-Backs embarrassed by Giants

It was downright ugly Wednesday night at Chase Field. An announced crowd of 24,336 left early from witnessed domination by the San Francisco Giants, to the tune of an 11-3 win. Ancient Giants’ second baseman Ray Durham opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo homer, and added a 3-run double in a 4-run 6th inning. Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis couldn’t repeat the gutty performance he put forth in his return to the mound last week from cancer surgery. Davis was shelled for 9 hits and 6 runs in just 5 innings.

There’s always a silver lining: Third baseman Mark Reynolds homered, right fielder Justin Upton went 1 for 3, ending an 0 for 27 stretch at the plate, and closer Brandon Lyon got mop-up work in the 9th, when he struck out the side. That bleak wrapup of highlights for the D-Backs reminds me of this exchange from The Bad News Bears.

Ogilvie: Well, we committed 24 errors, and their pitcher threw a no hitter against us, but there is some good news! Two of our runners almost managed to get to first base, and we did hit seventeen foul balls!

Buttermaker: That’s the spirit! Cokes and hot dogs on me!

Ok, maybe it wasn’t that bad.

Tonight: The Diamondbacks will try to snap a 3-game losing streak and avoid the sweep against the Giants. Barry Zito (1-8, 5.56 ERA) is on the mound for San Francisco, countered by the Diamondbacks’ Randy Johnson (4-1, 4.03 ERA)–man this would have been a great matchup 5 years ago- and that’s not a knock on Johnson. First pitch is 6:40 at Chase Field.
