Northern Arizona Sports Reports For 11/5

Flagstaff – The Arizona Sundogs and Odessa Jackalopes met on the ice in game two of their weekend series Saturday night in Prescott Valley. After a disappointing Friday night, the Sundogs rebounded to beat Odessa 5-2, regaining first place in the Southwest Division.

After going more than 167 minutes with a power play goal, Arizona converted on 50% of their chances to finish 3-for-6 with the man advantage, leading in both periods. With 6:20 expired in the third period, Odessa tallied its first goal of the night to spoil Sundogs netminder Andrew Gallant's shutout effort. After an intense night, Andrew Gallant scored his first win in his first professional start, stopping 22 of 24 shots, while Odessa goaltender Mike Gorman blocked 28 of 33 shots in the loss.

Arizona improved on special teams, finishing 3-for-6 with the man advantage while holding Odessa scoreless on its eight power plays. With this victory, the Sundogs improve to 5-2-1 on the season and move back into first place in the Southwest Division with a one-point advantage over second-place Odessa.

The team begin a two-week road trip with games against Colorado, New Mexico and Odessa before returning home to take on the Austin Ice Bats on Wednesday, November 21 at Tim's Toyota Center…

NAU football continues its lucky streak, as the Lumberjacks nail another victory in Montana. Junior Cyrus Igono blocked two second half punts to take a 29-14 comeback win on the road Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

NAU (6-4, 5-2 Big Sky) secured a winning season for a second consecutive season while staying alive for a second place finish in the Big Sky and a Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth. NAU scored first in the ball game, posting an 11-play, 75-yard drive to start the game. Henderson then scored from two yards out to give NAU a 7-0 lead. The extra point failed when it hit the right upright on a blustery day.

MSU went ahead after an 11-play drive capped by a 4-yard pass to Jack Rolovich from Josh Lewis. The Bobcats scored again on its next possession after a shanked punt by Kriesien gave MSU the ball on the NAU 15. Three plays later they led 14-6. Northern Arizona wraps up the regular season next week against Eastern Washington, with kickoff scheduled for 3:05 pm…

Lumberjack basketball is back, as Kyle Landry led all scorers with 20 points and tallied eight rebounds off the bench for the Northern Arizona men's basketball team in a 67-63 pre season win over Concordia University of Montreal, Quebec at the Rolle Activity Center Friday night. Northern Arizona tips its hat to longtime Wildcats Coach Lute Olson, who made a surprise announcement this weekend to take a leave of absence. Lute is a true sportsman, and has supported efforts for Arizona players across the board, his Wildcats have won 11 Pac-10 championships, and reached the Final Four four times and winning the 1997 NCAA title.

Lute is a straight shooter, as we learned from working with the coach on various projects via Fox Sports Radio. He was quite frank for this move, "For the past 25 years, I have always given 110 percent to the team and this job,” Olson said. “In light of this personal matter, I feel it is in the best interest of the team and the University of Arizona to take a leave of absence.” We wish Lute all the best, and look to his successful return!
