According to the Arizona Republic the Suns are waiting for an answer from former Bulls' center P.J. Brown. Steve Kerr called him last week offering a one-year deal for next season. Since we all know Steve can do magic with his phone (just remember how Grant Hill agreed to sign with Phoenix) there's reason to be optimistic.
Apparently Coach D'Antoni has identified P.J. as the much needed back up to Amaré and the post defender that could guard Tim Duncan in next year's playoffs. He's 6-11 and has always been known as an excellent defender. In other words, he's really what the Suns are looking for.
The Suns could expect 20 "solid" minutes a night from P.J. who last year played 72 games with the Bulls, including 49 as a starter and averaged 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while playing his usual solid defense. What's even more important is that P.J. stepped up in the playoffs, starting all 10 games for Chicago and scoring over 8 points per game.
Age shouldn't be much of a factor as P.J. – who will be 38 when the new season starts - has been extremely durable throughout his career. He averaged 76.5 games a season and never, in any season, missed more than 10 games. Of course he should be used with care as the primary reason to sign him will be to have him ready - and in shape - for the playoffs, when the games slow down, defense gets tougher, post play becomes crucial.
The signing won't be easy as P.J. has yet to decide whether he'll retire or play another year, in which case he'll certainly try to play for a contender and the Suns could be a perfect fit. Possibly only Miami could be a "better" destination for P.J. since he'll be closer to home playing in Florida.
As usual it won't be a matter of money since, well, it never is, especially if you're trying to win a championship at the end of your career, but he'll probably come cheaper than the 8 millions the Suns owed to Kurt Thomas which should please Suns' management.
So, P.J. if you're reading this, please, give a call to Steve Kerr. Phoenix is waiting for you.
Yours truly, Steve Fan
