Dale Hawerchuk Becomes Coach

Share

“Attitude is so important, and it changes quick in hockey.”

Former Winnipeg Jets player Dale Hawerchuk, steps behind the bench for the first time with the Orangeville Crushers of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League. He has been with the team in an executive capacity as well as part owner of the team for the past two years, and now he would like to see what kind of influence he would have as a coach.

Hawerchuk would know a little bit about playing the game of hockey. After he was drafted by the team in 1981, he led the Jets to the best single season turnaround in Jets history, a 48 point increase. Plus, he was at one time, the youngest player ever to reach 100 points, only to have that record shattered by Sidney Crosby.

After his sophomore season of 91 points, he then tallied 100 plus points for five consecutive seasons. During his 1984-1985 campaign, he became the third youngest player to score 50 goals in a season.

He will do his best to instill in his young players that right competitive attitude to win hockey games. The team could not ask for a better person and a better player to lead them in their development.
