Sidewinders sold; may head to Reno.

Sidewinders leaving town...

That’s the big news of the day. I’ve heard rumors of this on the horizon, but didn’t think that it would actually go down. It’s a sad day…the day the Sidewinders will leave Tucson.

Do these people realize they are taking away one of the only things you can do in Tucson during the summer?

Tucson majority owner Jay Zucker will sell the Triple-A team for a reported $13.5 million to a New York-based real-estate development company with an affiliate in Reno called SK Baseball.

Not only that, but knowing a few people who have worked with the Sidewinders and having gone to numerous games. The organization will be missed.

Tucson has had a minor league team since 1969. The Sidewinders, a minor-league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, rank 15th out of 16 teams in the PCL this year in attendance at 3,973 fans per game.

Poor attendance is no excuse to sell a team. Tucson is the PERFECT market for a minor-league team. Maybe if the Sidewinders owner knew a thing about baseball or a thing or two about marketing, the team could have easily gotten more than 4K fans to each game. The stadium was beautiful and at least last year, the team was more than good. This is a cop out and I guarantee you a team will be back in Tucson in the near future.

In any event…fun comments:

“Another pro franchise bites the dust in Taco Town. Poor attendance and the lack of interest in pro sports is typical for a third world town dominated by low wages, illegal aliens, and border Mexican Sophistication. Who cares as long as you don’t interfere with my siesta time amigos.”

Like this one, but he’s wrong. Low wages are perfect for minor league baseball.

Wrong place for the park. It is a beautiful park ,but what were they thinking when they put in that location. Closer to downtown would have been smarter.

This one is arguable. Sure a better location would have helped, but it didn’t seem to stop Spring Training crowds. Plus, you can’t tell me that the drive to the airport was better. How’s that for a stupid location….
